Route 168 as you are traveling south just over the Virginia state line
on Snowden Rd, in Moyock, North Carolina. Call us when you're coming

Whether you're contemplating owning alpacas or already are a new breeder, or even if you've been involved for some time, we recommend you research, read and visit as many farms to educate yourself about this wonderful animal called the Alpaca, and the industry that is growing rapidly all around it. The more educated we all are, the more successful our industry will be.
Our Philosophy: AlpacaNaca has carefully selected its own breeding program, selecting dams and sires to achieve our goal of healthy alpacas with excellent conformation and the finest fiber. Our broad selection of quality animals provides you the opportunity to select top quality alpacas for your start up herd or add to your existing herd. Check out our nationally known bloodlines below. We are a small, but growing hands on operation, and are completely committed to continual improvement through selective breeding.
At the present time, the alpaca industry is based on the sale of quality breeding stock, while the size of the national herd continues to grow by the thousands. Lineage, correct conformation, fleece quality, color and age are many factors that can influence individual alpaca prices. Alpacas are much like other commodities, the market pays a premium for flawless examples. We, as are other alpaca owners, breeders and farms, are committed to raising and continually striving for perfection. Prevention of genetic degeneration is a main goal as well.
Alpacas are part of the camelid
family, as are llamas, camels and giraffes. Originally from the South
American Andes mountains, they have been domesticated for thousands of
years. By selective breeding practices of these early Andean cultures,
the fiber spun was reserved only for royalty.
Today, there are only 2 types of alpacas, huacaya and suri. Huacaya produces fleece with crimp or a wavy quality to it, while the suri produces fleece with no crimp but lock structure or dreadlocks.
Alpacas stand about 3' tall and weigh on average 130-150 pounds, although that standard is getting larger. They have a life expectancy of 20 years and can reproduce for most of that time. Because gestation takes close to a year, protection against over production is built in. " Cria", the offspring, generally mature between 18 months and 3 years. They are intelligent, friendly gentle creatures that hum to communicate. Alpacas do not bite and instead of hooves, they have 2 padded toes on each foot that are environmentally friendly, your pastures will keep better. Alpacas are safe enough for children to care for.

Alpacas can provide a rewarding lifestyle and a great investment with high potential returns. As you would with any investment, make use of the educational tools available before making any decisions. They are easy to raise, requiring very little land, 6-8 per acre. Alpacas are very strong and hardy animals, eating approximately 1 bale of hay per month, and are very inexpensive to maintain. In North America, the average alpaca farm is 10 acres or less.
Tax advantages are another investment opportunity of owning alpacas. Whether you are a hands-on breeder or prefer someone else to do the work while you agist ( board) your alpacas, you can qualify for many deductions. Whim turns into lucrative alpaca business for couple!

SNOWDEN — Some women approaching middle age take jobs or go back to
school when their kids leave the nest. Others take up hobbies or start
businesses.
When
Leslie Watson-Leake's children left home some six years ago, she went
out and bought an alpaca.
It wasn't completely a whim.
Watson-Leake had
read up on alpacas, the South American cousin of llamas, camels and
giraffes. But at $12,000 each, buying one was a lot like bringing home a
sports car. In fact, Watson-Leake's husband, John, quips that the couple
didn't "talk for a while" after she bought the animal.
The couple's awkward silences didn't last long, however.
The Leakes, who then lived in Chesapeake, began breeding alpacas and
shearing them for their fleece in 2001. After moving to a farm in
Snowden, in Currituck County, in 2004, the couple set up AlpacaNaca
Farm. They currently care for about 30 alpacas, half of which they own,
the other half belonging to owners who've bought the animals from them.
